Lynn Mayes received her BFA at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has studied with Phillip Lawrence Sherrod at the Art Students League in New York; and with several studio artists at the Arrowmont School in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. She spend two summers on the island of Samos, Greece studying with Yannis Ziogas at the Art School of the Aegean.
Since 1994, Lynn Mayes has devoted her professional life to painting with oils and mixed media. Her subject matter ranges from figures to the landscape; sometimes the two are combined. Most of the images are living in her imagination, although some are taken directly from life. She has participated in a number of group shows in Nashville, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia.
Georgia Public Broadcasting featured Lynn Mayes on “State of the Arts” - the October 2006 edition. Her work has been reviewed in the Nashville Tennessean (1997), the Dekalb News Extra (1998), The Dunwoody Crier (1999), the Vanderbilt University Alumni magazine (2000), the Atlanta Journal Constitution (photo 2000), the Atlanta Jewish Times (2001), the Best of the Fest Magazine, State College, Pennsylvania (2003), Cottonwood Art Festival Magazine, Dallas, Texas (2004), Savannah Morning News (2006).
“I use grisaille technique with layers of oil glazes on a support textured with my handprints. The work is finished with ink, oil pastel, foil, wax, metallic acrylic and leaf. Some pieces are finished with epoxy resin. The images are generated in my imagination, and as the work progresses I become the vessel through which the painting takes on its own life.” Lynn Mayes
