Scott Wallace

Award winning, internationally published artist Scott Wallace was born in Maine where he attended the prestigious Portland School of Art on a full scholarship and sold his first painting at the age of 18.

His art has been featured in several magazines, the cover of a CD and has  sold to a broad base of private collectors in Africa, Canada, England, Germany, Honduras, Mexico and the U.S.

His works have been displayed and sold in hundreds of Shows, Galleries and other retail locations throughout the U.S.

Scott paints in several distinctly different styles under different pen names. Although his work has always sold it has drastically evolved over the years.

“I have trouble sticking to one thing or painting the same thing over and over again. This has probably been the key to my success and failure over the years. Many artists pigeon hole them self in doing one thing. They become know for that and it helps brand themselves as an artist. I find that boring. To suppress your creativity that way makes it difficult for you to grow after a while.  I will admit this hasn’t necessarily been the most sensible career move on my part. Being that I am so diverse someone who loves one of my styles may very well hate another style I paint in. I have been at times associated so strongly with one style that people won’t even consider my other styles.  On the other hand my diversity has allowed me to appeal to a much broader audience gaining me name recognition in many different areas. I have certainly become a much better artist over the years through constantly taking on new challenges, new styles, new themes and new pallets. This keeps my career forever fresh and exciting. It also keeps me working. “

When I started out I painted a lot of very loose, somewhat whimsical landscapes. Most of these were painted for the interior design industry and with the intentions to print. While doing that I honed more of my finer art skills privately painting portraits for friends and family. I moved into doing a lot of murals with the same loose feel. I started adding a lot of tropical animals and birds to the landscapes. With an increasing demand for my wildlife art it seemed like overnight my style changed. After years of doing this I felt even though my art was selling I wasn’t getting the recognition I wanted as an artist. I started painting extremely detailed landscapes. I was very proud of the outcome of most of the pieces.  They sold well but were more difficult for me to part with.  Now I still enjoy doing the finer art but need time to loosen up and release. To fill this need I paint abstracts on a regular basis. It allows me to start and finish a work in a reasonable amount of time leaving me with a sense of accomplishment.”

“The most important thing I have learned over the years is that detail is the least important. I can paint a piece to look exactly like a photograph most people can take their own picture so who really cares. Whether you are painting loose or tight, abstract or realistic your list of importance is as follows; composition, color choice, use of light, style and then only if the artist finds it important to either his goal or ego, detail.”

As of this writing Scott is working on a series of abstracts, a portrait, a detailed and massive underwater reef, a series of contemporary interior design pieces and is talking about doing some “Lowbrow art” He now resides in Florida with his beautiful wife and two girls where he continues to work full time in the art industry.
